1995
Let me have this dance. A sweetness, a breeze --I feel happy
for a moment, back to bed? Insolence is punished
with a sinking feeling. Sun so bright, cars zip by --
it almost feels like running. You are a monster
and a monster in that order. My eyes feel like they weigh
40 lbs. each and I have a headache. It gets ratty fast.
The light on the fire escape appears to move. A toilet
flushes somewhere in the building and we all smile
our incredible smiles, talk our incredible talk
and so it goes. Here comes the part about desire.
I can't wait to try my new flower schemes
out on some tourists. You should drink
a glass of cold water, climb back into bed and
sneeze repeatedly for effect. Rug burns where I tried
to make ends meet. Look how I move.
It is morning, the coffee is being made, there
are no secrets to be revealed yet. A bright
gluey future. Sprinkle affection. Watch my hand
draw squirrelly lines on your back -- it's
just like showbiz. The #1 law of golden thrills:
one must be careful or absolutely great.

StoryCorps (click here)
Do yourself a favor and listen to just two or three of the recordings at the link above and you'll find yourself changed, in a good way. You might even cry. But you'll be changed, definitely. Compiled here are some magnificent moments of humanity, lovingly assembled by my old friend David Isay. Go listen.

Vetiver
The candied burlap shattered
when you threw it at me.
Why would you do that? What the hell?
All the birds are jazzed-up
on bird medicine. The icebox
is tangled in fishing line so I can't open it.
The elegant porcelain pixie figurines
are all shattered: 1,2 & 3. The
crisp solitude of this matching day
is a drag. All the muscular parts are glistening
(sugar glaze). The stars dole out fractions
of juicy plums on Oscar Night (c).
My pajamas were once my curtains.
You'll always and only have the sleepy
motion of a reptile. You froze your jeans
so they would last longer.
That smell on my finger?
That's vetiver on my finger.

Love Todd -- "Bruise" -- Click Here to Listen
Here's a song from my current musical project called Love Todd. It's a song called "Bruise." As in "I bruise too easily."
Sleep
It's what sleep won't do
that makes the bed
fold over
and the animal
or two
in it
tumble
into spoon glimmer
all the sleep
you can eat
isn't enough
to make a meal
oh rest is just so
yesterday.

Drunken Boat/1992/Pool/Click Here
Here's a version of "Pool" that is also from the 1992 Lafayette Studio demo sessions. It's right at the brink of something. "On edge" comes to mind. Enjoy.
Best line: "The red dwarf is fucking with me."
Tonight I'll put a few "soft" songs up.

Drunken Boat/1992/Flat Land/Click Here
My friend Alex Edwards recently found this song (click the title above) by my band Drunken Boat in the archives of his studio. I lost the master DAT tape in the fire of '03. The song is "Flat Land" & we recorded it in a tiny basement studio on Lafayette Street in the winter of 1992. Later that spring we recorded another version in L.A. that came out on our CD "See Ruby Falls." This version is raw and wired. My vocals sound like I'd been touring a lot and drinking loads of coffee. I had been. Enjoy.
I have more, so I'll share them in the coming days.

Farmer -- not a lie
It was a green room but we were happy just to be in a room. They had fudge on a card table in the room that said Authentic Farmer Fudge so we nibbled on that while we waited for the farmer to arrive. A real farmer arrived that was not wearing the uniform of a farmer but the uniform of one who does farming. There were toothpicks on the floor and the farmer was agitated that they were strewn about. He accused us of making the mess and said that the fudge would be our breakfast. He said our skin would be our coats and that it would get cold soon -- so cold that the fudge would freeze and we would have to suck on the fudge to thaw it out enough to chew into it.

It should be remembered that nothing is more useless than an iPod Nano when everything is on fire or under water.

Ice mists grope
hanky panky
snow bank cuss
butternut spike
hand-over-hand
a bird in the kink
while queasy days
go magic
go spinning
go body--
my body is blue.

We Make Work
We make work
sweet we give hours
that we don't get back
we have trouble desks
and curtain rods (for beating)
we have muddy ears
and mittens with old
corn chowder in them
we are going to run
in a field full of snow
until the horizon bubbles
fists full of money
keep fantasies out
of this poem
we have ideas about
CAPITAL that we will
SHARE with you
in a LETTER
that we will
NEVER send.

Doing a Good Job
Do what you can for the people
heat mangles the thistle
smaller people doing
what is tied to the idea
slippery glass plate
glum old and pinker
money go, go money
this makes me stink like
a light blue forest fire
wax and matte blue
funk spit cough charge
you must get to know
my pancakes & rabbit punch.
Binky, I'm on a downward spiral
all you need is teeth and spunk to
celebrate the end of everything
massage the hate from me
calm down on the bike ride
the city really is something
else (to me) to be worried
about

Desire and not just killing
Desire and not just killing me
it was a sad flag
some tanks
this language he said is what
makes me run from cover
all the sparks adhere to gas
and the panic
what great
waves of it ping-pong
through my disguise which
is rancid only to you
that's the part about love
I adore the weather
in your head.

Some Facts About Desire
Open every session by asking
the client what they know about desire.
Tell clients that desire is an interesting animal.
Give them the facts.
Desire uses feet just like clients use their hands.
Desire enjoys insects and eggs and other symptoms.
If you measured desire it would go through the trash cans.
Desire doesn't sleep during the day
because it has sharp claws and teeth.
Have you ever seen desire with paws?
Would you like to keep desire as a pet
in your Brooklyn apartment with your cats?
What would you feed it?
You need: crayons, markers, scissors, glue, old syrup,
brown paper lunch bags, glitter, tissue paper, ginger,
bus driver, yarn, wind chill and cotton balls.
Using cotton balls, ginger, old syrup and glitter,
reproduce a desire fur pattern once for each client.
Help each client glue a brown paper lunch bag to the front of their body.
Encourage clients to create their own looks with the bus driver.
Place the lunch bag on the client's ribs and do a crayon
rubbing so the outline of the client's ribs appear on the bag.
Hold the bag up to the client's face and say "good desire."
Many clients like to talk about their life --
it will look and sound like this: "blah blah blah."
It is a form of distraction indicating an addiction
to pain relief of some sort.
Invite clients to recover from codeine palsy.
Though desire cannot be photographed
tell the client that you have a special camera
that is able to capture desire on film.
Staple a polaroid photograph of "desire"
to each client's face (it could be a photo
of ginger or yarn or the bus driver -- the
client won't be able to see it).
At the end of each session tell the client:
I have no other gift for you the receiver.

Desire and that is just not confusing.

Kara Hearn
Kara Hearn (karahearn.com) has done a series of movie reenactments on her website. The link above (click on her name at the top) is from Miranda July's excellent website Learning to Love You More (learningtoloveyoumore.com). Once you get there you'll see Kara playing all the parts in a pivotal scene from E.T. that "Made Someone Else Cry." She's brilliant and addictive -- enjoy!
